Spandau was an ancient town in its own right, centuries before it was incorporated in greater Berlin in 1920. Located several miles to the north-west of Berlin city centre, it stands on the River Havel. The Zitadelle (Citadel) stands on an island in the river.

The Citadel

The walls of the Citadel are on the right. In the distance is the tower of the mediaeval St Nikolai-Kirche.

These Roman-style arches form part of the Citadel's own harbour.
